Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1) What exactly is Caninsulin 10 mL and how does it work?
Caninsulin is a porcine insulin zinc suspension (U-40; 40 IU/mL) formulated for veterinary use. After injection, it helps move glucose from the bloodstream into cells, reducing high blood sugar associated with diabetes mellitus.
2) Is Caninsulin suitable for both dogs and cats?
Yes—Caninsulin is commonly prescribed for dogs and may be used for cats under veterinary direction. Dosing and monitoring protocols differ by species; always follow your vet’s plan.
3) Why must I use U-40 syringes with Caninsulin?
U-40 syringes are calibrated for 40 IU/mL insulin. Using U-100 syringes will deliver the wrong dose and can cause dangerous hypo- or hyperglycaemia.
4) How should I store the vial before and after opening?
Refrigerate at 2–8 °C, protect from light, and never freeze. Once punctured, most vets recommend discarding any remaining product after 28 days, even if insulin remains.
5) How do I mix the suspension correctly before dosing?
Roll the vial gently between your palms until it appears uniformly milky. Avoid vigorous shaking that introduces bubbles and can lead to dosing inaccuracies.
6) What are common signs of hypoglycaemia I should watch for?
Lethargy, unsteadiness, hunger, trembling, disorientation, or seizures. Offer a small amount of rapid-acting carbohydrate (e.g., glucose syrup) if your vet has advised this protocol, and contact your clinic urgently.
7) What should I do if I accidentally miss a dose?
Do not double the next dose. Follow your vet’s instructions; often you will wait until the next scheduled dose and continue the usual plan. Monitor closely for any signs of instability.
8) Can I switch between Caninsulin vials and insulin pens/cartridges?
Only under veterinary guidance. Devices use specific formulations and concentrations; do not switch without your vet’s explicit instructions and dose conversion.
9) How is the initial dose determined?
Veterinarians start with a weight-based starting dose and adjust using blood glucose curves, fructosamine values, or home glucose monitoring to reach a safe, effective maintenance dose.
10) Can diet and feeding times affect insulin control?
Absolutely. A consistent diet and feeding schedule is essential. Many vets pair dosing with meals to reduce hypoglycaemia risk and stabilise day-to-day control.
11) How long does a 10 mL vial last?
It depends on your pet’s IU dose and frequency. For example, a dog receiving 8 IU twice daily uses 16 IU/day, so a 10 mL vial (≈400 IU total) would last about 25 days—but you must still discard 28 days after first puncture, or sooner if advised.
12) Can I travel with Caninsulin?
Yes, using an insulated cooler with frozen gel packs. Keep the vial upright, avoid direct contact with ice, and minimise time outside refrigeration. Plan dosing around travel and keep syringes and a spare pen/backup as advised by your vet.
13) What if the insulin looks clumpy, stringy, or forms flakes?
Do not use it. Discard the vial and contact us or your veterinarian. Properly mixed Caninsulin should look uniformly milky with no clumps or sediment that won’t resuspend.
14) Can other medications (e.g., steroids, thyroid meds) affect insulin needs?
Yes. Corticosteroids, progestogens, and thyroid medications can alter glucose control. Inform your vet about all medicines and supplements so your pet’s insulin plan can be adjusted safely.
15) How often should my diabetic pet be re-checked?
Vets typically review patients every few weeks during stabilisation, then every 3–6 months once stable, or sooner if clinical signs change. Home monitoring can prompt earlier adjustments.
16) What disposal steps should I follow for used syringes and expired insulin?
Place needles/syringes in a sharps container and return via your council or veterinary clinic. Do not pour insulin down the sink or throw vials in general waste.
17) Does Caninsulin require a cold-chain during delivery?
Yes, insulin is temperature-sensitive. Discount Pet Meds ships with insulated packaging and cold packs and prioritises early-week dispatch with Express services where available.
18) Where can I buy Caninsulin 10 mL in Australia?
You can purchase Caninsulin 10 mL from Discount Pet Meds with a valid Australian veterinary prescription. We offer fast Express shipping and cold-chain packing for insulin orders.
19) What if my pet’s thirst, urination, or appetite suddenly changes?
Contact your veterinarian promptly. These can be signs of poor control or hypoglycaemia/hyperglycaemia, infection, pancreatitis, or other issues requiring dose or diet review.
20) Can I split or alter the timing of doses on busy days?
Only under veterinary guidance. Irregular dosing increases risk of instability. If your schedule changes, ask your vet for an approved contingency plan (e.g., slight timing shifts or feeding adjustments).
