Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. What is Atopica 10mg used for in dogs?
Atopica is used to manage chronic atopic dermatitis in dogs—a condition caused by environmental allergens leading to itchy, inflamed skin.
  2. How long does Atopica take to work?
Most dogs begin to show improvement within 4 weeks, though some may take up to 8 weeks for full effects. Consistent daily dosing is essential.
  3. Can Atopica be used long-term?
Yes, Atopica is safe for long-term use under veterinary supervision. Some dogs may even be maintained on a reduced frequency once symptoms are controlled.
  4. Is Atopica a steroid?
No, Atopica contains cyclosporin, an immunosuppressant, not a corticosteroid. It reduces inflammation without the side effects commonly associated with steroids.
  5. How should Atopica be given to dogs?
It should be given on an empty stomach—either 1 hour before or 2 hours after food. Follow your vet’s exact instructions for dosing.
  6. What are the possible side effects of Atopica?
Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or lethargy, especially in the early stages. Contact your vet if symptoms persist.
  7. Can Atopica be used with other medications?
Atopica can be used alongside some medications, but always consult your vet to avoid interactions—particularly with vaccines or immunosuppressants.
  8. Does Atopica need to be refrigerated?
No, Atopica should be stored below 25°C, away from moisture and sunlight. Do not freeze.
  9. What happens if I miss a dose?
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the next scheduled dose, skip it—do not double up.
  10. Can I open the capsules and mix them with food?
No, the capsules should be swallowed whole. Do not open, crush, or mix with food as this may affect absorption and efficacy.
  11. How is Atopica different from Apoquel or Cytopoint?
Atopica works by suppressing the immune response, while Apoquel blocks itch-related pathways and Cytopoint is a monoclonal antibody injection. Your vet will decide the best option for your dog.
  12. How much does Atopica 10mg cost?
Pricing varies, but you can find competitive prices at Discount Pet Meds.
  13. Can puppies use Atopica?
Atopica is not recommended for dogs under 6 months old or weighing less than 2kg.
  14. Is Atopica suitable for dogs with food allergies?
Yes, but it treats skin allergies caused by environmental allergens, not food. Work with your vet to identify specific triggers.
  15. Can I stop giving Atopica once symptoms improve?
Only reduce or stop treatment under your vet’s guidance. Stopping suddenly can cause symptoms to return.
  16. Do I need a prescription for Atopica in Australia?
Yes, Atopica is a prescription-only medication in Australia. A valid veterinary prescription must be provided to purchase.
  17. Where can I buy Atopica 10mg online?
You can order Atopica 10mg legally and affordably at Discount Pet Meds with a valid prescription.
  18. What if my dog vomits after taking Atopica?
If vomiting occurs, wait until the next scheduled dose. If it becomes frequent, consult your vet—an anti-nausea tablet may be recommended.
  19. Can Atopica be given with food if my dog gets sick?
While it’s ideally given on an empty stomach, giving it with a small amount of food may help reduce gastrointestinal upset. Confirm with your vet.
  20. How should I store unused capsules?
Keep capsules in the original packaging, tightly sealed, below 25°C. Dispose of expired medication safely through your vet or pharmacy.
