Feline hypertension is often associated with chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, or other underlying conditions. By helping to reduce blood pressure, Amodip supports protection of vital organs such as the eyes, kidneys, brain, and heart.

Indications

Amodip 1.25mg Tablets are indicated for the treatment of systemic hypertension in cats. High blood pressure in cats may be primary or secondary to conditions such as chronic kidney disease or hyperthyroidism. Use only as directed by an Australian-registered veterinarian.

Important Information

  • Species: For use in cats only. Do not use in dogs or other species.
  • Prescription status: Schedule 4 (Prescription Only) veterinary medicine in Australia.
  • Underlying disease: Your vet may investigate for concurrent kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, or other causes of hypertension before and during treatment.
  • Monitoring: Regular blood pressure checks and blood tests are usually recommended to monitor response and overall health.
  • Use with caution: In cats with severe liver disease, very low blood pressure, or heart disease, dosing must be carefully managed by your vet.
  • Storage: Store below the temperature indicated on the packaging, in a cool dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and other animals.

How Amodip Works

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes and widens blood vessels, reducing resistance in the circulatory system. This helps lower systemic blood pressure and decrease the workload on the heart, while protecting organs that are vulnerable to high pressure, such as the eyes and kidneys.

Directions for Use

Always follow the dosing instructions provided by your veterinarian. The dose is calculated based on your cat’s weight, blood pressure readings, and overall health. Do not change the dose, stop treatment, or add other medications without veterinary advice. If you miss a dose or your cat spits out a tablet, contact your vet for guidance.

Possible Side Effects

As with all medications, some cats may experience side effects. These can include reduced appetite, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea, or signs of low blood pressure (such as weakness or collapse). If you notice any unusual signs, contact your veterinarian immediately. Never give more than the prescribed dose.

Frequently Asked Questions – Amodip 1.25mg Cat Tablets

What is Amodip 1.25mg used for in cats?
Amodip 1.25mg is used to treat systemic hypertension (high blood pressure) in cats. By lowering blood pressure, it helps protect vital organs such as the eyes, kidneys, heart, and brain from damage caused by persistently high pressure.
How do I know if my cat has high blood pressure?
Feline hypertension is usually diagnosed by your veterinarian using a specialised blood pressure monitor. Signs can include sudden blindness, dilated pupils, disorientation, seizures, behaviour changes, or worsening kidney disease. Routine blood pressure checks are recommended in older cats and those with kidney or thyroid disease.
How long does my cat need to take Amodip?
High blood pressure in cats is often a long-term or lifelong condition. Most cats require ongoing treatment with regular check-ups and dose adjustments. Your vet will advise how often your cat’s blood pressure and blood tests should be checked.
How quickly does Amodip start working?
Some improvement in blood pressure may be seen within a few days, but your veterinarian may take readings over several weeks to ensure the dose is controlling pressure safely. Never increase or decrease the dose without veterinary guidance.
Can Amodip be given with food?
Yes, Amodip can usually be given with or without food. Many owners find it easier to give tablets in or with a small amount of food. Always follow your vet’s instructions and make sure your cat swallows the full dose.
What if my cat misses a dose or spits it out?
Do not double the next dose unless your veterinarian specifically instructs you to. If you are not sure whether your cat received the full dose, contact your vet for advice. Consistency is important for maintaining stable blood pressure.
Are there any common side effects with Amodip?
Some cats may show mild lethargy, reduced appetite, vomiting, or diarrhoea when starting treatment or after dose changes. If these signs are severe, persistent, or your cat appears unwell, contact your veterinarian promptly.
Can Amodip cause blood pressure to go too low?
Over-lowering of blood pressure (hypotension) is possible, especially at higher doses or in very sensitive cats. Signs include weakness, collapse, very slow heart rate, or extreme lethargy. If you notice any of these signs, seek veterinary care urgently.
Can my cat take Amodip with kidney or thyroid medication?
Many hypertensive cats are also being treated for chronic kidney disease or hyperthyroidism. Amodip is often used alongside these treatments, but all medications must be carefully balanced. Always tell your vet about every medication and supplement your cat is receiving.
Is Amodip safe for all cats?
Amodip should only be used in cats after a full veterinary assessment. Cats with advanced heart, liver, or kidney disease, or very low blood pressure, require careful dose selection and monitoring. Your vet will determine if Amodip is appropriate and safe for your cat.
Can I stop giving Amodip if my cat seems better?
No. Do not stop or reduce the dose without veterinary advice. Stopping treatment suddenly can allow blood pressure to rise again and may increase the risk of complications such as sudden blindness or stroke-like events.
How often should my cat’s blood pressure be checked?
Your veterinarian will decide the appropriate monitoring schedule. Typically, blood pressure is checked a few weeks after starting or changing treatment, then at regular intervals (for example every 3–6 months) depending on your cat’s condition and response.
What should I do if I accidentally give too many tablets?
Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic immediately. Overdose may cause severe low blood pressure, collapse, or other serious signs. Never wait for symptoms to appear before seeking help.
Does my cat need blood tests while on Amodip?
Many cats with hypertension also have kidney or thyroid disease, so your vet may recommend regular blood and urine tests to monitor organ function and adjust treatment as needed. Your vet will tailor a monitoring plan for your cat.
Can I split Amodip tablets?
Your vet will advise whether tablets can be divided to achieve the correct dose. If splitting is recommended, follow their instructions carefully and use a proper pill cutter for accuracy.
