Itraderm (Itraconazole) for Dogs & Cats

Manufacturer: InVetro Animal Health

Schedule: S4 — Prescription Animal Remedy (Australia). A valid veterinary prescription is required.

Active Ingredient

  • Itraconazole (antifungal; triazole class)

What Itraderm Is Used For

Itraderm (itraconazole) is a systemic antifungal used under veterinary direction to treat susceptible fungal infections in dogs and cats, including dermatophytosis (ringworm), Malassezia dermatitis, and other itraconazole-sensitive mycoses.

Key Features

  • Broad-spectrum antifungal activity against common dermatophytes and yeast.
  • Keratin affinity helps concentrate drug in skin, hair and nails.
  • Vet-directed courses (continuous or pulse therapy) tailored to species, weight and infection site.
  • Flexible formulations (capsules or oral solution) to support compliance.
  • Evidence-based therapy used widely in small-animal dermatology.

Sizes / Presentations

  • Oral solution: 10 mg/mL 52 mL bottle with dosing syringe

Directions & Administration (Vet-Guided)

  • Use only as prescribed by your veterinarian. Dosing depends on species, body weight, site/severity and whether continuous or pulse therapy is indicated.
  • Give with food unless your vet advises otherwise.
  • Complete the full course. Stopping early may lead to relapse or resistance.

Safety Information

  • Not for use in animals with known hypersensitivity to azoles.
  • Use with caution in animals with hepatic disease; your vet may recommend baseline and follow-up liver monitoring.
  • Drug interactions: itraconazole is a CYP3A4 inhibitor/substrate. Tell your vet about all medicines and supplements (e.g., some steroids, macrolides, antacids).
  • Commonly reported effects: reduced appetite, vomiting/diarrhoea, lethargy. If jaundice, severe vomiting, or marked lethargy occur, contact your vet promptly.
  • Pregnancy/lactation: use only if the expected benefit outweighs potential risks as assessed by your veterinarian.

Storage

  • Store below 25 °C, dry, away from direct light. Keep out of reach of children and animals.

FAQs — Itraderm (Itraconazole)

1) What is Itraderm and how does it work?

Itraderm contains itraconazole, a triazole antifungal that inhibits fungal cytochrome P-450-dependent synthesis of ergosterol, disrupting cell membranes and stopping fungal growth.

2) Which infections can it treat in pets?

Veterinarians use itraconazole for susceptible fungal diseases such as dermatophytosis (ringworm), Malassezia dermatitis/otitis (as part of a plan), and selected systemic mycoses where itraconazole is indicated.

3) Is it suitable for both dogs and cats?

Yes—your vet will select the appropriate formulation and regimen for dogs or cats, based on weight and diagnosis.

4) How long does treatment usually take?

Length varies from a few weeks to several months depending on infection site and response. Your vet may recommend continuous or pulse therapy and will advise when to stop (often after negative re-checks).

5) Do I give it with or without food?

Itraconazole is generally given with food to support absorption and reduce stomach upset, unless your vet instructs otherwise.

6) Can the tablets be split or the solution flavored?

Many capsules/tablets are scored for splitting; confirm on the label. Oral solution usually comes with a dosing syringe to improve accuracy and palatability.

7) What side effects should I watch for?

Common effects include reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, and lethargy. Rarely, hepatic effects can occur—seek veterinary advice if you notice jaundice, persistent vomiting, or marked depression.

8) Is blood testing required?

Your vet may recommend baseline and periodic liver enzyme checks, especially for longer courses or in animals with pre-existing risk factors.

9) Can Itraderm be used with other medications?

Itraconazole has important drug interactions (CYP3A4). Tell your vet about steroids, macrolide antibiotics, anticonvulsants, and any supplements. Never start/stop meds without vet approval.

10) What if I miss a dose?

Give it when remembered unless it’s close to the next dose—do not double dose. Ask your vet for specific advice if multiple doses are missed.

11) How quickly will I see improvement?

Skin improvement may be visible within 2–4 weeks; complete resolution often requires continuing therapy beyond visible recovery to prevent relapse.

12) Is itraconazole safe for young or senior pets?

Safety depends on individual health status. Vets weigh benefits vs risks; extra monitoring may be recommended for very young, geriatric, or medically complex patients.

13) Can I use human itraconazole instead?

Only under veterinary direction. Strengths, excipients, and dosing differ. For pets, a veterinary-label product or compounded form may be chosen to ensure accuracy and tolerance.

14) Will bathing or topical shampoos still be needed?

Often yes. Vets commonly pair systemic therapy with topical antifungal shampoos/rinses to reduce environmental contamination and speed clearance.

15) How should I store Itraderm?

Keep in original packaging below 25 °C, dry, away from light. Secure from children and other animals.

16) Can pregnant or nursing animals take itraconazole?

Use only if your veterinarian determines the benefits outweigh risks; safety data are limited in pregnancy/lactation.

17) Do I need to clip hair or isolate pets with ringworm?

Your vet may advise clipping long coats and environmental cleaning (vacuuming, disinfecting soft furnishings) to minimise reinfection and transmission.

18) Where can I buy Itraderm in Australia?

At Discount Pet Meds with a valid veterinary prescription. Order online and email the script to info@discountpetmeds.com.au or post to our pharmacy address per checkout instructions.

19) How do I send my prescription?

Upload during checkout, email us, or post the original (as required by state law). We’ll verify quickly and dispatch once approved.

20) What if my pet doesn’t tolerate the medicine?

Contact your veterinarian promptly. They may adjust the regimen, switch formulation, or consider an alternative therapy based on clinical progress.
