Itraderm (itraconazole) is a systemic antifungal used under veterinary direction to treat susceptible fungal infections in dogs and cats, including dermatophytosis (ringworm), Malassezia dermatitis, and other itraconazole-sensitive mycoses.
Itraderm contains itraconazole, a triazole antifungal that inhibits fungal cytochrome P-450-dependent synthesis of ergosterol, disrupting cell membranes and stopping fungal growth.
Veterinarians use itraconazole for susceptible fungal diseases such as dermatophytosis (ringworm), Malassezia dermatitis/otitis (as part of a plan), and selected systemic mycoses where itraconazole is indicated.
Yes—your vet will select the appropriate formulation and regimen for dogs or cats, based on weight and diagnosis.
Length varies from a few weeks to several months depending on infection site and response. Your vet may recommend continuous or pulse therapy and will advise when to stop (often after negative re-checks).
Itraconazole is generally given with food to support absorption and reduce stomach upset, unless your vet instructs otherwise.
Many capsules/tablets are scored for splitting; confirm on the label. Oral solution usually comes with a dosing syringe to improve accuracy and palatability.
Common effects include reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, and lethargy. Rarely, hepatic effects can occur—seek veterinary advice if you notice jaundice, persistent vomiting, or marked depression.
Your vet may recommend baseline and periodic liver enzyme checks, especially for longer courses or in animals with pre-existing risk factors.
Itraconazole has important drug interactions (CYP3A4). Tell your vet about steroids, macrolide antibiotics, anticonvulsants, and any supplements. Never start/stop meds without vet approval.
Give it when remembered unless it’s close to the next dose—do not double dose. Ask your vet for specific advice if multiple doses are missed.
Skin improvement may be visible within 2–4 weeks; complete resolution often requires continuing therapy beyond visible recovery to prevent relapse.
Safety depends on individual health status. Vets weigh benefits vs risks; extra monitoring may be recommended for very young, geriatric, or medically complex patients.
Only under veterinary direction. Strengths, excipients, and dosing differ. For pets, a veterinary-label product or compounded form may be chosen to ensure accuracy and tolerance.
Often yes. Vets commonly pair systemic therapy with topical antifungal shampoos/rinses to reduce environmental contamination and speed clearance.
Keep in original packaging below 25 °C, dry, away from light. Secure from children and other animals.
Use only if your veterinarian determines the benefits outweigh risks; safety data are limited in pregnancy/lactation.
Your vet may advise clipping long coats and environmental cleaning (vacuuming, disinfecting soft furnishings) to minimise reinfection and transmission.
