How Epibrom Works

Potassium bromide works by stabilising neuronal activity in the brain, reducing abnormal electrical impulses that trigger seizures. It is commonly used as a long-term therapy due to its reliability and ability to maintain steady blood levels when dosed consistently.

Directions for Use

Give exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian. Consistent daily dosing is crucial for maintaining effective bromide levels. Do not adjust the dose, change diet, or switch brands without veterinary approval.

Possible Side Effects

Epibrom may cause sedation, wobbliness, increased thirst, vomiting or behavioural changes. Contact your veterinarian immediately if signs become severe, worsen or do not improve over time.

Frequently Asked Questions – Epibrom Tablets for Dogs

What is Epibrom used for?
Epibrom is used for long-term seizure and epilepsy management in dogs. It contains potassium bromide, which helps reduce seizure frequency and intensity.
How long does Epibrom take to work?
Potassium bromide may take several weeks to reach full therapeutic levels. Your veterinarian will monitor progress and adjust therapy as needed.
Is Epibrom safe for long-term use?
Yes, many dogs are on potassium bromide for life. Regular blood monitoring ensures levels remain within the safe and effective range.
Can Epibrom be used together with phenobarbital?
Yes. Many dogs receive combination therapy for improved seizure control, especially in refractory epilepsy.
What happens if I change my dog's diet?
Salt intake affects bromide blood levels. Increasing or decreasing dietary salt can lead to under- or overdosing. Always consult your vet before making dietary changes.
What should I do if my dog misses a dose?
Contact your veterinarian for advice. Do not double the next dose unless your vet instructs you to.
Does Epibrom cause sedation?
Sedation and hindlimb weakness (ataxia) are common early in treatment. These signs may improve over time. If symptoms worsen, contact your veterinarian.
Can Epibrom be used in dogs with kidney disease?
Bromide is processed differently in the body when kidney disease is present. Dogs with kidney concerns require careful veterinary assessment before using Epibrom.
Should Epibrom be given with food?
It may be given with or without food. Some dogs experience fewer stomach upsets when tablets are given with meals.
Can I stop Epibrom suddenly?
No — abrupt withdrawal of anti-seizure medication can cause rebound seizures. Always follow your veterinarian's tapering instructions.
How should Epibrom be stored?
Store at room temperature below the manufacturer’s recommended limit, away from light, moisture, and children.
What are the most common side effects?
Common side effects include sedation, wobbliness, increased thirst, increased urination, vomiting, or behaviour changes. Report persistent signs to your veterinarian.
Can pregnant dogs take Epibrom?
Safety in pregnant or lactating dogs has not been established. Your veterinarian will determine the safest management plan.
How often are blood tests needed?
