Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Cerenia 24mg used for?

Cerenia 24mg is prescribed to prevent and treat vomiting in small to medium dogs, including vomiting caused by gastrointestinal disease, medication reactions or motion sickness.

2. Why choose the 24mg strength?

This strength allows accurate dosing in smaller dogs without needing to split larger tablets, helping ensure correct and consistent treatment.

3. How fast does Cerenia begin working?

Cerenia is known to work quickly, often reducing vomiting and nausea within a few hours of administration.

4. How does maropitant citrate stop vomiting?

Maropitant blocks NK1 receptors involved in the vomiting reflex, preventing the action of substance P, a key neurotransmitter responsible for triggering nausea and vomiting.

5. Can I give Cerenia with food?

Yes. Giving Cerenia with a small meal or treat may help reduce the chance of stomach upset, especially for motion-sickness treatment.

6. Can Cerenia 24mg be given daily?

Your vet may recommend once-daily dosing for a set number of days. Follow your veterinarian’s instructions on duration and frequency.

7. How long does one dose of Cerenia last?

One dose generally provides up to 24 hours of antiemetic relief.

8. Are there common side effects?

Some dogs may experience mild lethargy, drooling, diarrhoea or reduced appetite. Severe side effects are uncommon but require immediate veterinary attention.

9. Can puppies take Cerenia 24mg?

Puppies may use Cerenia only if your vet determines it is appropriate. Age and weight restrictions apply.

10. Can Cerenia be used for car sickness?

Yes. Cerenia is one of the most effective veterinary medications for preventing motion sickness in dogs. Your vet will advise how long before travel it should be given.

11. What should I do if my dog vomits after a dose?

Contact your vet before giving another dose. Whether to repeat depends on timing, severity and your dog’s condition.

12. Can Cerenia 24mg be used long-term?

In some cases, Cerenia may be used for longer periods, but only under veterinary supervision with regular check-ups.

13. Can I split the 24mg tablet?

Only split tablets if your veterinarian specifically instructs you to. Splitting may lead to inaccurate dosing.

14. Does Cerenia treat the cause of vomiting?

No. Cerenia treats vomiting itself but not the underlying cause. Your vet will determine why your dog is vomiting and recommend further treatment if needed.

15. What if I miss a dose?

If a dose is missed, contact your veterinarian. Do not double-dose unless your vet explicitly advises it.

16. Can Cerenia be given with other medications?

Yes, often. However, only your vet can determine safe medication combinations based on your dog’s treatment plan.

Store tablets in their original packaging in a cool, dry place away from heat and sunlight.

18. Can cats use the 24mg tablets?

Maropitant is used in cats, but dosing is different. Do not give dog-formulated Cerenia to cats unless your veterinarian prescribes it.
