Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Cerenia 16mg used for in dogs?

Cerenia 16mg Tablets are prescribed by veterinarians to help prevent and treat vomiting in dogs, including vomiting caused by motion sickness or other underlying medical conditions, as determined by your vet.

2. How does maropitant in Cerenia work?

Maropitant is a neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of substance P, a key neurotransmitter involved in the vomiting reflex, helping reduce nausea and vomiting in dogs.

3. Does Cerenia 16mg treat the cause of vomiting?

No. Cerenia is an antiemetic that controls vomiting and nausea, but it does not treat the underlying cause. Your veterinarian will investigate why your dog is vomiting and may recommend further tests or additional treatment.

4. How should I give Cerenia 16mg Tablets to my dog?

Give Cerenia exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian. Tablets are usually given once daily, either hidden in a small amount of food or placed directly in your dog’s mouth. Always follow the dose and timing instructions on your pet’s prescription label.

5. Should Cerenia be given with food?

Your vet may recommend giving Cerenia with a small meal or snack, especially for motion sickness, to help reduce the risk of stomach upset. Follow your vet’s specific advice for your dog.

6. How long before travel should I give Cerenia for motion sickness?

Many vets recommend giving Cerenia several hours before travelling so it has time to take effect. Always follow the timing instructions provided by your veterinarian for your dog’s specific situation.

7. How long does Cerenia 16mg last?

In most dogs, a single dose of Cerenia provides up to 24 hours of antiemetic effect. Your vet will advise how many days of treatment are needed based on your dog’s condition and response.

8. Are there any side effects with Cerenia?

Some dogs may experience temporary side effects such as lethargy, drooling, decreased appetite or soft stools. Severe or persistent side effects are uncommon but should be reported to your vet immediately.

9. Can I use Cerenia 16mg in puppies?

Cerenia may be used in puppies of a certain age and weight under veterinary guidance. Your vet will determine whether it is appropriate and safe for your puppy and prescribe the correct dose.

10. What should I do if my dog vomits after taking Cerenia?

If your dog vomits shortly after receiving Cerenia, do not automatically repeat the dose. Contact your veterinarian for advice, as they will consider the timing, severity and underlying condition before recommending the next step.

11. Can Cerenia be given with other medications?

Cerenia is often used alongside other treatments, such as pain relief or gastrointestinal medications. However, only your vet can decide if it is safe to combine it with your dog’s current medicines. Always inform your vet of everything your dog is taking.

12. Do I need a prescription for Cerenia 16mg in Australia?

Yes. Cerenia 16mg Tablets are a prescription-only (Schedule 4) veterinary medicine in Australia. A valid prescription from an Australian veterinarian is required before Discount Pet Meds can dispense it.

13. Where can I buy Cerenia 16mg Tablets online?

You can purchase Cerenia 16mg Tablets from Discount Pet Meds, an Australian veterinary pharmacy. Simply place your order online and upload, email or post your vet’s prescription so we can dispense it safely.

14. Can Cerenia be used long-term?

In some cases, vets may prescribe Cerenia for longer-term use, for example in dogs with chronic conditions causing nausea. Long-term use should always be supervised by your veterinarian, with regular check-ups as advised.

15. How should I store Cerenia 16mg Tablets?

Store Cerenia in its original packaging in a cool, dry place, away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and other pets.

16. Can I split or crush Cerenia tablets?

Only split or crush tablets if your vet has specifically instructed you to do so. Altering the tablet may affect accurate dosing or palatability, so always check with your veterinarian first.

17. What if I miss a dose of Cerenia?

If you miss a dose, ask your vet for advice. In many cases, you may give the dose when you remember, unless it is close to the next scheduled dose. Do not double-dose without veterinary guidance.

18. Can Cerenia be used in cats?

Maropitant (the active ingredient in Cerenia) is also used in cats, but dosing, indications and products differ. Do not give dog-formulated Cerenia to cats unless your vet has specifically prescribed it for your cat.

19. Is there a generic version of Cerenia 16mg?

Cerenia is a branded maropitant product. Availability of generic alternatives may vary. Your veterinarian or the team at Discount Pet Meds can advise if there are suitable alternatives for your pet’s situation.

20. What should I do in case of accidental overdose?

If you suspect your dog has received more than the prescribed dose, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately. Provide details of the amount taken and your dog’s weight so they can guide you on urgent next steps.
