Cardalis helps reduce fluid retention, ease the workload on the heart, and improve overall quality of life in dogs with chronic heart disease.

How Cardalis Works

Cardalis contains two active ingredients working in synergy. Benazepril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that dilates blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and reducing the workload on the heart. Spironolactone is an aldosterone antagonist that helps prevent sodium and water retention, reducing fluid buildup in the lungs and body. Together, they support more efficient heart function in dogs with congestive heart failure.

Directions for Use

Always give Cardalis exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian. The dose is based on your dog’s body weight and clinical condition. Cardalis is generally given once daily with food, but follow the instructions on your dog’s prescription label. Do not change the dose, skip doses, or stop treatment without veterinary advice.

Possible Side Effects

Some dogs may experience vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, or lethargy. In rare cases, changes in kidney values, high potassium levels, or low blood pressure may occur. Contact your veterinarian promptly if your dog shows weakness, collapse, severe gastrointestinal upset, or any other unusual signs.

Frequently Asked Questions – Cardalis 5mg/40mg Medium Dogs

What is Cardalis 5mg/40mg prescribed for?
Cardalis 5mg/40mg is prescribed for medium-sized dogs with congestive heart failure due to degenerative valve disease (such as mitral valve insufficiency). It helps reduce fluid buildup and lowers the strain on the heart.
Is this strength suitable for my dog’s size?
The 5mg/40mg strength is intended for medium dogs. Your veterinarian will choose the most appropriate strength and dosage based on your dog’s body weight and heart condition. Never change strengths without veterinary guidance.
How long will my dog need to stay on Cardalis?
Congestive heart failure is a chronic condition and usually requires lifelong treatment. Most dogs stay on Cardalis long term, with periodic check-ups to monitor response and adjust dosing if needed.
How quickly should I see improvement after starting Cardalis?
Some dogs show improvement in breathing, energy levels, and coughing within days to weeks of starting treatment. However, response varies, and regular veterinary reviews are important to assess progress.
Should Cardalis be given with food?
Yes, Cardalis is typically administered with food to improve absorption and minimise stomach upset. Follow the specific directions given by your veterinarian.
Can Cardalis be used with other heart medications like Vetmedin?
Yes. Cardalis is often used alongside other heart medications such as pimobendan (Vetmedin), furosemide, or other diuretics as part of a comprehensive heart failure management plan. Your vet will decide the best combination for your dog.
What side effects should I watch for?
Watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, poor appetite, marked lethargy, weakness, or collapse. Also keep an eye on any changes in drinking or urination. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian promptly.
Can Cardalis affect kidney function?
Cardalis can influence kidney blood flow and electrolyte balance. This is why your vet may recommend regular blood and urine tests to monitor kidney function and potassium levels during treatment.
Is Cardalis safe for all dogs with heart disease?
Cardalis is not suitable for every dog. Dogs with severe kidney disease, high potassium levels, very low blood pressure, or certain hormonal conditions may need alternative therapy. Your veterinarian will evaluate your dog’s full health history before prescribing Cardalis.
Can I stop Cardalis if my dog seems better?
No. Stopping heart medication suddenly can cause symptoms to return or worsen. Any change in dosage or medication should only be made under veterinary supervision.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, contact your vet for advice. Do not give a double dose to make up for a missed one unless your veterinarian specifically instructs you to do so.
Can Cardalis be given with NSAIDs or pain relief medications?
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can affect kidney function and may interact with ACE inhibitors and spironolactone. Always inform your vet about all medications, including pain relief, before starting or continuing Cardalis.
Can my dog’s diet affect treatment with Cardalis?
Your vet may recommend a specific cardiac or kidney-supportive diet. It is important not to change your dog’s diet or add supplements without consulting your vet, as this may affect fluid balance and overall heart management.
How often will my dog need check-ups while on Cardalis?
Check-up frequency depends on disease severity, but many dogs are reviewed every 3–6 months, or more often when treatment is first started or adjusted. Your vet will tailor a monitoring schedule to your dog’s needs.
Can Cardalis cause high potassium levels?
Yes. Spironolactone can increase potassium levels in some dogs. Regular blood tests help detect any change early so your vet can adjust treatment if needed.
Can Cardalis be split if I need a different dose?
Some tablets are scored and may be split if your veterinarian specifically instructs you to do so. Never change the way you give Cardalis without consulting your vet.
