It is used in the management of congestive heart failure (CHF) due to atrioventricular valvular insufficiency. Cardalis works by supporting the heart, reducing fluid retention, and improving your dog’s overall cardiovascular stability.

Important Information

  • Species: Dogs only. Do not use in cats.
  • Prescription: Schedule 4 (S4) medication—Australian prescription required.
  • Not for use in: Dogs with severe kidney failure, hyperkalaemia, or known sulfonamide allergy.
  • Monitoring: Blood tests may be needed to check electrolytes, kidney values, and response to therapy.
  • Drug interactions: Use with caution alongside NSAIDs or potassium supplements.
  • Storage: Store at the temperature specified on the package, away from moisture and light.

How Cardalis Works

Cardalis combines two cardiovascular medications: benazepril, which relaxes blood vessels and reduces pressure on the heart, and spironolactone, which prevents fluid buildup by blocking aldosterone. Together, they help stabilise heart function and slow the progression of congestive heart failure.

Directions for Use

Give exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian. Cardalis is typically administered once daily with food. Do not alter the dose or discontinue treatment without veterinary advice. If a dose is missed, contact your veterinarian for instructions.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects may include vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, lethargy, or increased thirst. Serious reactions such as weakness, collapse, or abnormal heart rhythm require immediate veterinary attention. Contact your vet if any unusual signs occur.

Frequently Asked Questions – Cardalis 2.5mg/20mg

What is Cardalis used for in dogs?
Cardalis is used to manage congestive heart failure caused by degenerative mitral valve disease. It helps improve heart efficiency and reduce fluid buildup.
Is the 2.5mg/20mg strength meant for small dogs?
Yes. This strength is specifically formulated for small-breed dogs. Your veterinarian will determine the correct dosage based on body weight.
How long does my dog need to take Cardalis?
Congestive heart failure typically requires lifelong management. Most dogs take Cardalis long-term under regular veterinary supervision.
How quickly does Cardalis start working?
Some improvement in breathing, energy, and comfort may be seen within days, but full clinical stabilisation may take several weeks.
Can Cardalis be used with other heart medications?
Yes. Cardalis is often part of a broader heart management plan including medications such as pimobendan (Vetmedin) or furosemide. Always follow your vet's instructions.
Should Cardalis be given with food?
Yes, Cardalis should be administered with food to optimise absorption and reduce stomach upset.
Can I stop giving Cardalis if my dog seems better?
No. Cardalis is a long-term therapy. Stopping treatment suddenly may worsen heart failure. Any dose changes must be done under veterinary guidance.
What if I miss a dose?
Contact your veterinarian for advice. Do not double the next dose unless specifically instructed.
Are there any serious side effects to watch for?
Weakness, collapse, severe vomiting, or abnormal heartbeat are possible but rare. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you observe concerning symptoms.
How often should my dog be monitored?
Your vet may recommend blood tests and check-ups every few months to monitor electrolytes, kidney values, and overall response to treatment.
Can Cardalis cause high potassium levels?
Yes, spironolactone may elevate potassium levels in some dogs. Regular monitoring helps detect this early and allows dose adjustments.
Is Cardalis safe for dogs with kidney disease?
Dogs with kidney disease may still take Cardalis, but close monitoring is essential. Your vet will assess kidney function before and during treatment.
Can puppies take Cardalis?
Cardalis is typically used in adult dogs with diagnosed heart disease. It should not be used in puppies unless your veterinarian determines it is necessary.
Can Cardalis be split?
Some tablets may be scored, but splitting should only be done if your veterinarian instructs you to ensure accurate dosing.
What if my dog vomits after taking Cardalis?
Contact your veterinarian. Your dog may need to take the medication with food or require a dose adjustment.
Can Cardalis interact with NSAIDs?
Yes. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can affect kidney function and interact with ACE inhibitors. Always inform your vet of all medications your dog is taking.
