Cardalis 10mg/80mg Tablets for Large Dogs

Cardalis 10mg/80mg is a prescription combination medication for large dogs containing benazepril (an ACE inhibitor) and spironolactone (an aldosterone antagonist). It is used in the long-term management of congestive heart failure (CHF) caused by atrioventricular valvular insufficiency, particularly degenerative mitral valve disease. Cardalis supports cardiac function, reduces fluid buildup, and helps improve your dog’s breathing, comfort, and overall heart health.

Spironolactone 80mg
Target species Dogs (large breeds)
Manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Australia Pty Ltd

Key Features

  • Combination of benazepril and spironolactone designed for large-breed dogs with CHF.
  • Improves blood circulation by relaxing blood vessels and reducing pressure on the heart.
  • Reduces fluid retention and workload on the heart by blocking aldosterone.
  • Helps manage symptoms such as coughing, laboured breathing, and exercise intolerance.
  • Supports long-term heart function and stabilisation of chronic heart disease.
  • Usually administered once daily with food for convenience and consistent absorption.
  • Prescription-only medication for safe and monitored cardiac therapy.

Indications

Cardalis 10mg/80mg is indicated for the treatment and long-term management of congestive heart failure caused by atrioventricular valvular insufficiency (such as degenerative mitral valve disease) in large dogs. It assists in improving quality of life and reducing the progression of heart disease under the guidance of an Australian-registered veterinarian.

Important Information

  • Species: Dogs only. Not suitable for cats.
  • Prescription: Schedule 4 medication—requires an Australian veterinary prescription.
  • Use with caution: Dogs with kidney disease, dehydration, low blood pressure, or high potassium levels require close monitoring.
  • Monitoring: Blood tests may be recommended to assess kidney values and electrolyte balance.
  • Drug interactions: Use with care alongside NSAIDs, other diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or potassium supplements.
  • Storage: Store below the temperature indicated on the packaging. Keep tablets in the blister pack until use.

How Cardalis Works

Cardalis combines two medications that work together to improve heart function. Benazepril widens blood vessels, lowering pressure and increasing blood flow, while spironolactone reduces sodium and water retention to limit fluid buildup. This dual action helps stabilise dogs with congestive heart failure and reduces strain on the heart.

Directions for Use

Administer exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian. Cardalis is generally given once daily with food. Never adjust the dose or discontinue treatment without veterinary advice. If a dose is missed, contact your veterinarian for guidance.

Possible Side Effects

Some dogs may experience vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, or lethargy. More serious reactions—such as weakness, collapse, abnormal heart rhythm, or severe gastrointestinal upset—require immediate veterinary attention. Always report unusual signs to your vet promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions – Cardalis 10mg/80mg Large Dogs

What is Cardalis 10mg/80mg used for?
Cardalis 10mg/80mg is used to treat congestive heart failure caused by degenerative valve disease in large-breed dogs. It helps manage symptoms, reduce fluid buildup, and support long-term heart function.
Is the 10mg/80mg strength suitable for large dogs?
Yes. This strength is designed for large-breed dogs. Your veterinarian will determine the correct dose depending on your dog’s weight and clinical condition.
Does Cardalis cure heart failure?
Cardalis does not cure heart failure, but it significantly helps manage the condition, slow progression, and improve quality of life when used long-term with veterinary supervision.
How quickly will my dog show improvement?
Some improvement in breathing and comfort may be seen within a few days to weeks, though full stabilisation may take longer depending on disease severity.
Can Cardalis be taken with Vetmedin (pimobendan)?
Yes. Cardalis is commonly prescribed alongside Vetmedin, furosemide, and other heart medications to manage congestive heart failure more effectively.
Should Cardalis be given with food?
Yes. Giving Cardalis with food helps with absorption and reduces the risk of stomach upset.
Can my dog miss a dose?
If a dose is missed, contact your veterinarian for advice. Do not give double doses unless specifically instructed.
What side effects should I monitor?
Watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, lack of appetite, weakness, lethargy, or collapse. Contact your vet immediately if symptoms are severe or persistent.
Does Cardalis affect kidney function?
Cardalis can influence kidney blood flow and electrolyte levels. Regular blood tests may be recommended to monitor kidney function and potassium levels, especially in senior dogs.
Can Cardalis cause high potassium?
Yes. Spironolactone can increase potassium levels, particularly when used with other medications. Periodic blood tests help detect this early.
Is Cardalis safe for dogs with kidney disease?
Dogs with kidney disease may still be prescribed Cardalis, but they require close monitoring. Your veterinarian will assess whether Cardalis is appropriate for your dog.
Can Cardalis be used long-term?
Yes. Congestive heart failure is a chronic condition, and Cardalis is commonly used as part of long-term management.
Can I stop Cardalis if my dog seems better?
No. Stopping heart medication can worsen your dog’s condition. Any changes to dosing must be made with veterinary supervision.
Can Cardalis interact with pain relief medications?
Some NSAIDs may interact with ACE inhibitors and increase strain on the kidneys. Always tell your veterinarian about any medications your dog is taking.
Can Cardalis be split?
Only split Cardalis tablets if your veterinarian specifically instructs you to do so. Accurate dosing is essential for cardiac management.
How often will my dog need check-ups?
Many dogs require check-ups every 3–6 months, or more frequently when medication is first started or adjusted. Your vet will create an individual monitoring plan.
