Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. What is ATOPICA 100mg used for in dogs?
ATOPICA is prescribed to treat atopic dermatitis — a chronic inflammatory skin condition caused by allergies. It helps reduce itching, redness, and skin infections associated with the disease.
  2. How does cyclosporin work in ATOPICA?
Cyclosporin suppresses overactive immune responses by inhibiting T-cell function, thereby reducing inflammation and symptoms of allergic skin disease without the use of steroids.
  3. How long does ATOPICA take to show results?
Most dogs show noticeable improvement within 4 to 8 weeks of daily dosing. Some may respond sooner, depending on the severity of the condition.
  4. Does ATOPICA cure atopic dermatitis?
No, ATOPICA manages the symptoms of atopic dermatitis. It does not cure the condition but allows for long-term control of flare-ups and discomfort.
  5. Is ATOPICA a steroid?
No, ATOPICA is a non-steroidal immunosuppressive medication. It offers an alternative to corticosteroids with fewer long-term side effects.
  6. What is the correct dosage for ATOPICA 100mg?
Dosage is based on your dog's body weight and your veterinarian’s prescription. Typically, it's administered once daily and may be reduced after initial control is achieved.
  7. Can ATOPICA be used long-term?
Yes, ATOPICA is designed for long-term use and is generally well tolerated when monitored by a vet.
  8. What are the potential side effects of ATOPICA in dogs?
Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, or reduced appetite. These are often temporary. More serious effects are rare but should be reported to your vet.
  9. How should ATOPICA be administered?
Administer on an empty stomach (at least 2 hours before or after a meal) to ensure optimal absorption. Capsules should be given whole — not split or crushed.
  10. What if I miss a dose of ATOPICA?
If a dose is missed, give it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the next dose, skip the missed one and continue with the regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
  11. Where can I buy ATOPICA 100mg online in Australia?
You can order genuine ATOPICA 100mg Capsules from Discount Pet Meds, Australia’s trusted online pet pharmacy, once you submit a valid veterinary prescription.
  12. Can I stop giving ATOPICA once my dog’s skin improves?
Always follow your vet’s instructions. Some dogs may transition to alternate-day dosing or maintenance doses, but abrupt discontinuation can lead to flare-ups.
  13. Can ATOPICA be used with other allergy medications?
Yes, ATOPICA can be used with other treatments (such as antihistamines or topical therapies), but only under veterinary supervision.
  14. How should ATOPICA be stored?
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Keep capsules in the original packaging until use and out of reach of children or other animals.
  15. What’s the difference between ATOPICA and Apoquel?
While both treat skin allergies, ATOPICA is an immunosuppressant (cyclosporin), whereas Apoquel is a JAK inhibitor. Your vet will determine the best option based on your dog’s condition.
  16. Is ATOPICA available in different strengths?
Yes, ATOPICA comes in 10mg, 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg capsule options to accommodate different dog weights.
  17. Can ATOPICA be used in cats?
No, ATOPICA for dogs is not approved for cats. There are feline-specific formulations of cyclosporin your vet can prescribe if needed.
  18. What happens if my dog vomits after taking ATOPICA?
If vomiting occurs regularly, consult your vet. They may adjust the dose or recommend giving it with a small snack to ease digestion.
