How Apoquel Chewable Works

Oclacitinib, the active ingredient in Apoquel, is a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor. It targets key signalling pathways involved in itch and inflammation. By selectively blocking these pathways, Apoquel helps reduce the sensations of itch and associated skin inflammation without the broad immunosuppressive effects of traditional corticosteroids.

Directions for Use

Always follow the dosage and schedule provided by your veterinarian. The dose depends on your dog’s weight and clinical condition. Do not change the dose, frequency, or duration of treatment unless instructed. If you are unsure how to give the tablet, ask your vet or pharmacist for advice.

Possible Side Effects

Some dogs may experience vomiting, diarrhoea, decreased appetite, lethargy, or other changes, particularly when treatment begins. Most effects are mild and temporary, but you should contact your veterinarian promptly if your dog appears unwell, develops new lumps, or if any signs persist or worsen.

Frequently Asked Questions – Apoquel Chewable 5.4mg

What conditions is Apoquel Chewable 5.4mg prescribed for?
Apoquel Chewable 5.4mg is prescribed for dogs with allergic dermatitis or atopic dermatitis. These conditions often cause intense itching, redness, and recurrent skin infections. Apoquel helps break the itch–scratch cycle so the skin can recover alongside any other treatments your vet recommends.
Why would my vet choose the 5.4mg strength instead of the 3.6mg tablet?
The strength your vet selects depends on your dog’s body weight and the dosing guidelines on the product label. The 5.4mg chewable tablet is commonly used for medium and larger dogs, as it may better match the required dose and reduce the number of tablets needed per dose.
How quickly should I expect my dog’s itching to improve on Apoquel 5.4mg?
Many dogs show noticeable improvement in itching within 4–24 hours of the first dose, although response time can vary. Some dogs may take several days to show maximum benefit. If you do not see any improvement, or if itching worsens, contact your veterinarian for review.
Can the Apoquel Chewable 5.4mg tablet be split?
The Apoquel Chewable tablet is scored, and your veterinarian may advise splitting it to achieve a specific dose for your dog’s weight. You should only divide tablets if your vet has indicated this on the prescription label and has explained how to do so safely.
Should Apoquel Chewable be given with food?
Apoquel Chewable can generally be administered with or without food. Some dogs tolerate it better when given with a meal. Follow the instructions provided by your vet and aim to give the medication at the same time each day for consistent control of symptoms.
Is it safe to use Apoquel 5.4mg long term?
Apoquel is often used as part of a long-term management plan for chronic allergic skin disease. Your vet will weigh the benefits and any potential risks and may recommend periodic check-ups and laboratory tests. Never continue long-term medication without ongoing veterinary supervision.
What if my dog vomits after taking an Apoquel tablet?
If your dog vomits soon after receiving a dose, do not automatically give another tablet. Contact your veterinarian for specific advice. They may suggest waiting until the next scheduled dose or adjusting how the medication is given, such as administering it with food.
Can Apoquel Chewable 5.4mg be used alongside steroids or other allergy medications?
In some cases, your veterinarian may recommend Apoquel in combination with other treatments, such as short courses of corticosteroids, medicated shampoos, or allergen-specific immunotherapy. Because drug interactions and overlapping side effects must be considered, you should never add or remove medications without consulting your vet.
My dog has other health problems. Is Apoquel still appropriate?
Dogs with a history of cancer, chronic infections, or immune-mediated disease require careful assessment before starting Apoquel. Your vet will review your dog’s medical history, current medications, and test results before deciding whether Apoquel is suitable and whether any additional monitoring is needed.
Can puppies or breeding dogs take Apoquel Chewable 5.4mg?
Apoquel is not recommended for dogs under 12 months of age, and its safety has not been fully evaluated in breeding, pregnant, or lactating animals. Use in these groups should only occur if your veterinarian determines that the benefits clearly outweigh potential risks.
What are the most common side effects seen with Apoquel?
Commonly reported side effects include mild gastrointestinal upset (such as vomiting or diarrhoea), decreased appetite, or lethargy, particularly when treatment is first started. Less commonly, changes in blood test results or the development of masses may occur. Any unusual signs should be reported to your veterinarian promptly.
How should I store Apoquel Chewable tablets at home?
Keep the tablets in their original blister or container, stored below the maximum temperature listed on the packaging and away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Always store medications out of reach of children and other pets, and never use the product past its expiry date.
What happens if my dog accidentally receives too many tablets?
If you suspect your dog has been given more Apoquel than prescribed, contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary service immediately and follow their instructions. Do not wait for symptoms to appear. Keep the packaging on hand so you can provide details of the strength and number of tablets ingested.
Can I suddenly stop Apoquel once my dog’s skin looks better?
You should not alter or stop your dog’s medication without veterinary input. In some cases, your vet may recommend dose adjustments or step-down protocols rather than stopping abruptly. Sudden discontinuation may allow itching and inflammation to flare again.
