How It Works

Oclacitinib is a selective Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor that targets specific pathways involved in the itch and inflammatory response. By blocking these signals, Apoquel helps to reduce itching and associated skin inflammation without the need for traditional corticosteroids in many cases.

Directions for Use

Always follow the dosage and administration schedule prescribed by your veterinarian. Do not adjust the dose, skip doses, or stop treatment without veterinary advice. If you miss a dose, contact your vet for guidance.

Possible Side Effects

As with all medications, some dogs may experience side effects. Report any vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, lethargy, unusual lumps, or other changes to your veterinarian promptly. Your vet will advise whether treatment should be adjusted or discontinued.

Frequently Asked Questions – Apoquel Chewable 3.6mg

What is Apoquel Chewable 3.6mg used for in dogs?
Apoquel Chewable 3.6mg is prescribed for the control of itching and inflammation associated with allergic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis in dogs. It helps reduce scratching, licking, and chewing so the skin can recover and your dog can feel more comfortable.
How quickly does Apoquel Chewable start working?
Many dogs experience noticeable relief from itching within 4 hours and a marked improvement within 24 hours of starting treatment, although individual responses can vary. Always follow your veterinarian’s instructions and allow time for the medication to reach full effect.
Is Apoquel Chewable 3.6mg suitable for all dogs?
Apoquel is approved for dogs that are at least 12 months old. It may not be suitable for dogs with serious infections, immune-mediated disease, certain cancers, or for breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs. Your veterinarian will assess your dog’s health history and decide whether Apoquel is appropriate.
How is the dose of Apoquel Chewable determined?
The dose is calculated by your veterinarian based on your dog’s body weight and the severity of the condition. Do not try to calculate or adjust the dose yourself. Always follow the exact instructions printed on the prescription label.
Can I give Apoquel with food or other medications?
Apoquel Chewable can usually be given with or without food, but you should follow your veterinarian’s recommendation. Your vet should be informed about all medications, supplements, and flea or worm products your dog is receiving so they can check for potential interactions.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
If you accidentally miss a dose, contact your veterinarian for advice. Do not double up the next dose unless your vet specifically tells you to. Maintaining a consistent dosing schedule helps keep itching under control.
Are there common side effects with Apoquel Chewable?
Some dogs may experience vomiting, diarrhoea, decreased appetite, or lethargy, especially when treatment is first started. Most side effects are mild and transient, but you should contact your veterinarian if your dog appears unwell or if any signs persist or worsen.
Can Apoquel be used long-term for chronic allergies?
Apoquel is commonly used as part of a long-term management plan for atopic dermatitis and chronic allergies, under veterinary supervision. Your vet may recommend periodic check-ups and blood tests to monitor your dog’s overall health while on ongoing treatment.
Is Apoquel Chewable 3.6mg the same as the standard Apoquel tablets?
Apoquel Chewable contains the same active ingredient, oclacitinib, but in a palatable, chewable format that many dogs find easier to take. Both forms require a veterinary prescription and must be dosed according to your vet’s instructions.
Can I stop Apoquel once my dog’s itching improves?
Do not stop, reduce, or change your dog’s Apoquel dose without talking to your veterinarian. Abruptly stopping treatment may allow itching and skin inflammation to return. Your vet will guide you on how long treatment should continue and whether any changes are appropriate.
What is the difference between Apoquel and steroids for allergy control?
Apoquel works by selectively blocking specific itch and inflammation pathways (JAK inhibition), whereas corticosteroids broadly suppress the immune system. Many vets use Apoquel to manage allergic skin disease while aiming to reduce reliance on steroids, which can have more systemic side effects with long-term use. Your vet will choose the most suitable option for your dog’s condition.
Can Apoquel be used together with allergy testing or immunotherapy?
Apoquel can often be used as part of a broader allergy management plan, which may include dermatology work-ups, allergy testing, and allergen-specific immunotherapy. Your vet or veterinary dermatologist will tailor the plan to your dog’s needs and advise how Apoquel fits into that strategy.
Does my dog need regular check-ups while taking Apoquel?
Regular veterinary check-ups are recommended, especially for dogs on long-term treatment. These visits allow your vet to review your dog’s skin condition, overall health, weight, and any potential side effects, and to adjust the treatment plan if needed.
What should I tell my vet before starting Apoquel?
Inform your veterinarian about any previous illnesses, infections, immune-mediated conditions, tumours, or chronic diseases your dog has had. Also mention all medications and supplements your dog is currently taking. This helps your vet assess the safety and suitability of Apoquel for your pet.
Can puppies or breeding dogs take Apoquel Chewable?
Apoquel is not recommended for dogs under 12 months of age or for breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs unless your veterinarian specifically decides the benefits outweigh the risks. Always follow your vet’s professional advice for these groups.
How should I store Apoquel Chewable tablets?
Store the tablets in their original packaging, in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture, and below the temperature indicated on the label. Keep the product out of reach of children and other animals. Do not use the tablets after the expiry date.
