How Apoquel Chewable Works

Apoquel contains oclacitinib, a selective Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor. It targets key itch and inflammatory pathways, providing relief without the broader immunosuppressive effects associated with corticosteroids. This targeted action allows many dogs to respond quickly with improved comfort and skin condition.

Directions for Use

Administer exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian. The correct dosage depends on your dog’s weight and diagnosis. Do not adjust the dose or frequency without veterinary guidance. If a dose is missed, contact your vet for instructions.

Possible Side Effects

Some dogs may experience mild gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting or diarrhoea when starting treatment. Reduced appetite or lethargy may also occur. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice unusual lumps, prolonged illness, or any concerning symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions – Apoquel Chewable 16mg

What is Apoquel Chewable 16mg used for?
Apoquel Chewable 16mg is used for the management of itching and inflammation caused by allergic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis in large dogs. It helps reduce scratching and restores comfort.
How is the 16mg strength different from other Apoquel tablets?
The 16mg strength is the highest available dose and is typically prescribed for large-breed dogs that require a higher amount of oclacitinib to achieve therapeutic effect. Your vet determines the most appropriate strength based on your dog’s body weight.
How fast does Apoquel 16mg start working?
Most dogs experience significant relief within 4–24 hours of the first dose, though some may take slightly longer. Improvement continues over the following days as inflammation subsides.
Can I give Apoquel 16mg with food?
Yes, Apoquel Chewable can be given with or without food. Some dogs tolerate the medication better when given with a meal. Follow any specific advice from your vet.
Is long-term use of Apoquel safe?
Many dogs safely use Apoquel long-term under veterinary supervision. Regular check-ups help your vet monitor for any potential issues and adjust treatment if necessary.
Can Apoquel Chewable 16mg be combined with other allergy medications?
Your vet may prescribe Apoquel alongside medicated shampoos, antihistamines, flea control, immunotherapy, or short-term corticosteroids. Never add or remove medications without consulting your veterinarian.
Can I split the 16mg Apoquel Chewable tablet?
The tablet is scored, and splitting may be permitted if your vet specifies this on the prescription. Do not divide tablets unless instructed, as inaccurate dosing may occur.
Are there side effects I should watch for?
Mild vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, or tiredness may occur. Rarely, dogs may develop skin lumps or infections. Any persistent or unusual signs should be reported to your veterinarian promptly.
Is Apoquel suitable for dogs with cancer or chronic disease?
Dogs with certain cancers or immune-related illness require careful assessment before starting Apoquel. Your vet will determine whether it is appropriate and what monitoring may be needed.
Can puppies take Apoquel 16mg?
No. Apoquel is not recommended for dogs under 12 months old because their immune systems are still developing, and safety has not been established.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Contact your veterinarian for instructions. Do not double the next dose unless specifically directed. Consistent dosing helps maintain effective itch control.
Can I stop giving Apoquel when my dog looks better?
Do not stop or change the dose without veterinary advice. Allergic and atopic dermatitis typically require ongoing management, and sudden withdrawal may cause symptoms to return quickly.
How should I store Apoquel 16mg tablets?
Store the tablets in their original packaging in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and other pets.
What should I do in case of accidental overdose?
Contact your veterinarian or an emergency vet clinic immediately. Provide details of the strength and number of tablets consumed. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
Where can I buy Apoquel Chewable 16mg in Australia?
Apoquel Chewable 16mg is available by prescription only and must be dispensed by a pharmacy or veterinary outlet. You can purchase it online from Discount Pet Meds by placing your order and supplying a valid Australian veterinary prescription.
Why is an Australian-issued prescription required?
Australian law mandates that Schedule 4 medications like Apoquel be supplied only with a valid script from an Australian-registered veterinarian. This ensures proper diagnosis, safe dosing, and ongoing monitoring for your dog.

What if Apoquel 16mg is not enough to control my dog’s itching?
If your dog’s symptoms persist, contact your veterinarian. Additional diagnostics, treatment adjustments, or combination therapy may be required. Do not increase the dose without veterinary direction.
How does Apoquel compare with steroids for allergy management?
Steroids suppress inflammation broadly throughout the body, while Apoquel targets specific itch pathways. This selective action often results in fewer systemic side effects, making Apoquel a preferred long-term therapy for many allergic dogs under vet supervision.
