Amantadine Compounded is a prescription veterinary medication used in dogs and cats to assist in the management of chronic pain and neuropathic pain. It is commonly prescribed as part of a multimodal pain control plan, particularly for pets with osteoarthritis or pain that is not fully controlled with anti-inflammatory medications alone.
Compounded formulations allow customised strengths and dosage forms, such as flavoured oral liquids or capsules, to suit individual patient requirements and improve ease of administration.
Compounded Amantadine is a customised veterinary medication prepared to help manage chronic or neuropathic pain in dogs and cats when standard formulations are unsuitable.
Veterinarians commonly prescribe Amantadine as an adjunct therapy for chronic pain, especially osteoarthritis or nerve-related pain that does not respond fully to anti-inflammatory medications alone.
Amantadine works by blocking NMDA receptors in the nervous system, helping reduce pain sensitisation and improving the effectiveness of other pain medications.
It is usually prescribed alongside other medications such as NSAIDs or gabapentin rather than as a sole pain treatment.
It may be prepared as flavoured oral liquids, capsules, or other customised strengths depending on your pet’s needs and veterinarian’s instructions.

It can be used long term under veterinary supervision, especially for chronic arthritis or neuropathic pain management.
Pets with kidney disease may require dose adjustments. Always inform your veterinarian about any existing medical conditions.
The active ingredient is the same, but compounded veterinary versions are customised to suit pet dosing and administration needs.
Compounded formulations allow precise dosing, easier administration, and flavouring to improve acceptance in pets.
Store according to the pharmacy label instructions, usually below 25°C and protected from light. Some liquid formulations may require refrigeration.
Expiry depends on the formulation. Always follow the expiry date and instructions provided on the pharmacy label.
